Crooked River Track
Crooked River Track is a stunning 4WD adventure winding through Victoria’s Alpine National Park, offering a mix of river crossings, rocky sections, and scenic bushland. This track is renowned for its numerous water crossings—up to 24 in total—ranging from shallow to moderately deep, making it a perfect choice for those who enjoy a wet and wild challenge. The terrain varies from gravel to rocky inclines, requiring a capable 4WD with good ground clearance and water-prepared equipment. The surrounding scenery, including rugged hills and pristine riverbanks, adds to the charm of this iconic track.
Billy Goat Bluff Track
Billy Goat Bluff Track is one of Victoria's most iconic 4WD tracks, offering a steep, adrenaline-filled climb with breathtaking views of the High Country. Located near the Alpine National Park, this track features loose rocky surfaces, sharp switchbacks, and narrow sections that demand precise driving and a well-prepared vehicle. The ascent to the Pinnacles Fire Lookout rewards adventurers with panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges, making it a favorite among off-roaders. While manageable in dry conditions for experienced drivers, the track becomes far more challenging during wet weather.
Mount Pinnibar Track
Mount Pinnibar Track is a steep and spectacular 4WD trail that leads to the summit of Mount Pinnibar (1,772m), one of the highest drivable peaks in Victoria. The track is famous for its long, relentless climbs and descents, featuring loose shale, rocky sections, and deep ruts that test both vehicle and driver. The steepest sections require low-range 4WD, good throttle control, and high clearance, making it a challenge even in dry conditions. There are a few minor water crossings, particularly near the base of the track, but water is generally not a major obstacle. However, rain can make the track extremely slippery and significantly increase difficulty, especially on the descents.
Zeka Spur Track
Zeka Spur Track is a steep and rugged 4WD route that serves as the main access track to the Wonnangatta Valley within Victoria’s Alpine National Park. Known for its long, sustained climbs and descents, this track features loose rocks, deep ruts, and tight switchbacks that require precise vehicle control. The track can be tackled in either direction, but the descent into Wonnangatta is particularly challenging due to its length and rough terrain. While there are a few minor creek crossings, water is generally not a major obstacle on Zeka Spur Track. However, rain can make the track significantly more difficult, turning the surface into a slippery mess with limited traction. A high-clearance 4WD with low range, good all-terrain or mud tyres, and recovery gear is essential, especially in wet conditions.
Herne Spur Track
Herne Spur Track is a steep and challenging 4WD route in Victoria’s Alpine National Park, connecting Wonnangatta Valley to the surrounding high country. This track is renowned for its long, relentless climb, loose rocky surfaces, and deep ruts, making it one of the more difficult ascents in the region. The track is narrow in sections with limited passing opportunities, requiring careful driving and good vehicle control.
