The southern section of the Old Telegraph Track is a legendary 4WD adventure, offering a thrilling mix of deep water crossings, steep entry and exit points, rutted tracks, and technical driving challenges. Located in Cape York Peninsula, this section begins at Bramwell Junction and takes off-roaders through iconic crossings like Palm Creek, Ducie Creek, and Dulhunty River. The track varies from sandy stretches to muddy bogs and eroded gullies, requiring a capable 4WD with high clearance, snorkel, and recovery gear. While dry season conditions (May to October) make it more manageable, recent rains can significantly alter difficulty levels. This historic track is a must-do for any serious off-roader, offering both challenging terrain and stunning tropical scenery.

The northern section of the Old Telegraph Track (OTT) is a true test of both driver skill and vehicle capability, featuring some of the most famous and challenging water crossings in Australia. Starting from Fruit Bat Falls and stretching to the Jardine River, this section includes deep crossings, steep drop-ins, sandy and rocky terrain, and rutted tracks that push even experienced 4WDers to their limits. The northern section of the OTT is an exhilarating final stretch before reaching the Jardine River Ferry. It’s best tackled in the dry season (May–October), as wet-season conditions can make crossings impossible. High-clearance 4WDs with snorkels, lockers, and recovery gear are strongly recommended for this unforgettable Cape York adventure.

Frenchmans Track is a remote and challenging 4WD route cutting through the rugged wilderness of Cape York, offering a true off-road adventure for experienced drivers. Known for its rough terrain, deep river crossings, and steep ascents and descents, this track connects the Bamaga Road with the Portland Roads Road, passing through some of the most untouched landscapes in the region. The two biggest challenges on Frenchmans Track are its major river crossings: Wenlock River – A wide crossing with a strong current and deep sections, requiring careful assessment before entry. Pascoe River – The most notorious crossing, with steep, rocky entry and exit points, fast-flowing water, and deep pools that can quickly flood a vehicle if not approached correctly. Apart from these, the track features numerous washouts, rocky sections, and sandy patches that test both driver skill and vehicle capability. A high-clearance 4WD, snorkel, recovery gear, and off-road experience are essential. The track is best tackled in the dry season (May–October), as wet-season rains make the rivers impassable.

Creb Track

The CREB Track (Cairns Regional Electricity Board Track) is one of Queensland’s most infamous and scenic 4WD tracks, cutting through the dense and rugged Daintree Rainforest. Known for its steep ascents, slippery clay surfaces, deep ruts, and challenging river crossings, this track is strictly for well-prepared off-roaders with high-clearance 4WDs, mud-terrain tyres, and recovery gear. The most notorious obstacle is the Daintree River crossing, which can become impassable after heavy rain. The track is heavily weather-dependent, with even a small amount of rain turning the clay base into a near-impossible surface, making winching and recovery a likely necessity. Stunning rainforest scenery, remote wilderness, and breathtaking views of the Bloomfield River Valley make this an unforgettable adventure. Important note: The CREB Track is seasonally closed after rain due to extreme slipperiness and risk of damage. Always check local conditions and only attempt in dry weather. This track is best suited for experienced 4WDers looking for a true off-road challenge in one of Australia’s most spectacular landscapes.
